Science Today
for Better Care Tomorrow
The Science and Engineering team at the Child Mind Institute is dedicated to transforming the lives of children with mental health and learning disorders through the power of scientific discovery. To address the growing crisis in children’s mental health, our researchers work to guide interventions by building a rigorous understanding of the developing brain — an understanding based on reproducible scientific results rather than appealing theories or anecdotal evidence.
Five Focus Areas
Our team’s effort to revolutionize brain science is focused on five main areas:
- Fundamental Neuroscience
- Advancing Methods
- Global Open Science
- Applied Technologies
- Training Future Leaders
It’s an ambitious program in support of an audacious goal, and our children deserve nothing less.
One of the greatest barriers to reliably improving mental health interventions is the fact that diagnosis and treatment are subjective. We’re leading a global effort to identify objective, measurable brain- and behavior-based biomarkers to guide clinical practice.
There is a crisis of reproducibility in psychology. That’s why we’re focused on improving the methods in brain research. We’re developing analytical and neuroimaging tools that allow scientists to pool data, gain deeper insights into brain signals, and strengthen the science behind mental health treatments.
We freely share our data, methods, and tools to speed scientific advancement. By partnering with institutions worldwide, we’re leading the way toward a global culture of open science. While we’ve published hundreds of papers in top scientific journals, our data has been used in thousands.
There is an extreme shortage of mental health practitioners nationally and globally, so the Child Mind Institute is developing digital apps and wearable devices that will bring improved care to anyone with a smartphone. And all of our innovations are open-source and free to use.
Investing in the scientific leaders of tomorrow will accelerate discovery and transform children’s lives. From scholarship awards for promising student scientists to research fellowships at our New York offices, we nurture the spark of innovative thinking that moves science forward.
